Ayanami is a destroyer based on Japanese destroyer Ayanami (1929) (Japanese: 綾波).

Introduction

Ayanami was the 11th of Fubuki-class destroyers and the first of Special Type II. The angle of her main gun was extended, comparing with the Special Type I. Ayanami was reconstructed after the Fourth Fleet Incident. She was under Southern Force in the early stage of the Pacific War. In August 1942, she was designated to the Guadalcanal and joined the Third Battle of Solomon Sea, in which she dealt damage to at least 4 warships of U-country including battleship South Dakota. Her performance was outstanding in this battle, but this was her last mission. Ayanami sank soon due to severe damage and explosions induced by torpedoes.

Namesake

Ayanami, literally: "twilled waves".

Trivia

  • Clothes are of the same style as Shikinami's.
  • Her face and hair style design is a homage to Rei Ayanami, the female protagonist in Neon Genesis Evangelion. As Rei's surname was came from the Japanese destroyer Ayanami.
  • Ayanami refers South Dakota as a "respectable opponent". However, in fact the battleship who sunk her during the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was Washington.

Modification

  • The mod illustration is drawn by a different illustrator (ALLENES, Fubuki-class's illustrator).
  • After modification and full enhancement her torpedo is up to 95, without any equipment.
  • HP does not affect herself in Night Combat if her ability awakes. However, if she is critically damaged, she still cannot launch torpedo. So this ability is useful only when she is moderately damaged (HP bar is yellow).
